The sunrise paints the desert in vibrant colors and brings it to life. Here, just half an hour from the Las Vegas strip, the world is quiet and still. I borrowed the neon colors from the city, but kept them soft, the way desert colors are.

Red Rock Canyon was love at first sight for me. This was the first ever trail I hiked there, on a warm morning before another 100 degree day. Short, prickly yuccas line the trail going up into the mountains, wildflowers in-between. I felt like I could soar here. I felt the energy of freedom that this place naturally possesses. What a treat, to see this unkempt wilderness right on the outskirts of town.

If you ever go hiking in Calico Basin, think of me - and think of Neon Desert I.
