My first few years in California, I marveled at the dry hills. How could they be so bright ochre, and the sky - so deep blue against them? This painting, the most “surreal” of the collection, is a reflection of how I feel about those hills: fascinated, enamored, drawn to them, and admiring their almost otherworldly glory. And that’s how I painted them: not quite true to life, but making a big statement with their sheer presence.
